Baby Faith

Today's Verse:

By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king's commandment. ~Hebrews 11:23

The faith of Moses is referred to five times in Hebrews 11:23-29. He demonstrated great faith at critical junctures of his life. The first mention of his faith occurs when he was born. It is not so much his faith as it is the faith of his parents. This morning, let us see how the faith of his parents was instrumental in the start of faith in Moses. 

We see a passionate couple. 

The parents of Moses were Amram and Jochebed. They were descendants of the tribe of Levi. They were a simple couple. There was nothing humanly outstanding about them. They loved each other and had two children prior to Moses. They also were a spiritual couple. They were God-fearing and sought to be pleasing to God. They were a testimony to the fact that husbands and wives can thrive together in faith. By faith, they prayed. By faith, they served. By faith, they lived for God. Godly couples walk by faith. 

We see a powerful conviction. 

The king passed a law that required baby boys born to any Hebrew couple to be drowned in the Nile River immediately after his birth. This was a heinous law that sought to curb the Hebrew population growth. The devil is a murderer, and some of his insidious methods have been through abortion and infanticide. However, Amram and Jochebed had a conviction that life is a gift from God. They would not destroy their newly born son. People of conviction would rather die for their faith than to compromise. People who have great faith stand for what they believe in even if they have to stand alone. They lived by the conviction, “We must obey God rather than man.” 

We see a purposed concealment. 

They hid Moses for the first three months of his life. They determined to keep this little baby boy from the hands of Pharaoh. They hid him from the grasp of the devil. They hid him from Egyptian influence. They nurtured Moses in the safety and sanctity of their home. Are you shielding your children in prayer and the Word of God? Are you shielding your children from corrupting influences? They had a limited window of time to touch this baby’s life, and they did so by keeping him out of the reach of the world and the devil. 

We see a persuaded courage. 

“They were not afraid of the king’s commandment.” They accepted the risk of being exposed and being put to death. I don’t think they knew that Moses would become the great leader of Israel, but they decided that he had potential in the eyes of God. Even today, laws are being passed that want to unduly influence your child or remove parental oversight. Parental courage to raise children to have character, convictions, a desire for God, and godliness is needed more than ever before. It takes courage to tell the school board you will not allow them to indoctrinate your child in humanism and gender confusion. It takes courage to tell the legislators that their proposed legislation to encourage sinful living will not be tolerated by you. 

The faith of Amram and Jochebed planted seeds of faith in the life of Moses. Have a faith outlook for your family today, and decide to obey God regardless of the consequences.
