Come With Us
And Moses said unto Hobab, the son of Raguel the Midianite, Moses' father in law, We are journeying unto the place of which theLORD said, I will give it you: come thou with us, and we will do thee good: for the LORD hath spoken good concerning Israel. ~Numbers 10:29
Moses and the nation of Israel were within days of making their journey to claim the land of promise. We know that the lack of faith on the part of key leaders and the nation resulted in the people being chastened to wander in the wilderness for forty years. However, foremost in his mind, Moses thought about what the journey of their lifetime would be. He thought of the blessings to come. He thought of the settlement that all the people would have. He thought of a theocracy, a nation where God was their king. He also thought about one man who had been very helpful to him: Hobab, or Jethro, his father-in-law. Moses desired that Hobab would accompany them on this great journey. He said to him, “Come thou with us, and we will do thee good.” Let us consider the matter of synergy or teamwork.
There is the principle in synergy.
Synergy is when two or more parties or forces join together for the sole purpose of accomplishing something. Instead of the two parties trying to accomplish a task separately, they realize that the uniting of their resources and talents will have a much greater impact. Synergy emphasizes a spirit of teamwork. It has the idea that everyone together accomplishes more. Synergy emphasizes a spirit of oneness and harmony. The team is focusing on the big goal. When a family synergizes, that family is moving in one direction towards family harmony. When a church synergizes, that church is moving in the right direction towards furthering the gospel and strengthening the body of Christ.
There is the plea for synergy.
Moses made an invitation to Hobab: “Come thou with us, and we will do thee good.” He remembered how Jethro’s counsel many times before was instrumental in his life. He remembered how Jethro’s leadership inspired him in leading. Instead of being a lone ranger, Moses exhorted, “Come thou with us.” When Paul received the call to go to Macedonia, two words compelled him: "Help us"! When he told his team members, they agreed to go to Macedonia. There’s value in serving the Lord together. There is value in winning souls together. There’s value in serving people together. There’s value in participating in a major project like a building construction campaign or attendance promotion emphasis.
There is the product in synergy.
Moses said, “For the LORD hath spoken good concerning Israel.” God blesses unity! Paul said we are co-laborers together with God. When we synergize with like-mindedness, our resources are put to a much more enhanced use. When we synergize, our prayers are pleasing to God. When we synergize, more is accomplished in less time. When we synergize, the focus is on a team and not an individual. When we synergize, we are maximizing the blessings of God upon our efforts.
Synergy requires that we abandon selfish and personal agendas for the purpose of seeing more done for God’s glory. Synergy is seeing that I’m part of something bigger than me and that will outlast me. Come thou with us, and we will do thee good!
