But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil. ~Psalm 92:10
Oil is made by applying strong pressure to olives until all of the oil has been extracted. Many olives need to be crushed to produce a small container of oil. Oil is a vital necessity of life. It is used for medicinal purposes; it is used to relieve a person or an animal during the intense heat of the day; and it is used for cooking. It was also used to indicate the approval of God upon a new king or a prophet of God. Oil is a symbol of the Holy Spirit. David made a remarkable statement when he said, “I shall be anointed with fresh oil.”
Oil poured over the head of a man indicated God’s approval on that man for service as a prophet of God or as a king. It symbolized God’s equipping and power on that man to fulfill the service that God had for him. Pastors need fresh oil for preaching and service. Soulwinners need fresh oil for souls to be saved. Servants of God need fresh oil so that their service makes an impact in the lives of people. David was at a juncture in his life where he needed a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
“Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah” (1 Samuel 16:13). David’s first anointing placed God’s hand on his life for lifelong service. The oil was poured on his head and allowed to drip down his face, down his clothing, and flow until it touched his feet. Oil must cover and permeate all of our being. David had subsequent outpourings of oil when the men of Judah, and eventually all the men of Israel, acknowledged him as king. He not only was anointed with oil, but it was fresh oil that covered him from head to toe. No anointing is complete unless it is permeating.
Fresh oil on his life meant David was ready for service. After his first anointing, we see David overcoming the giant Goliath. After his subsequent anointings, David was decisively victorious over the Philistines and other hostile nations. Fresh oil gives us power that is from above. Fresh oil gives us endurance for the ongoing conflicts. Fresh oil gives us power over every foe. Fresh oil is the game-changer when it comes to serving the Lord. David said, “I shall be anointed with fresh oil.” He knew what fresh oil did for him in the past, and he knew what fresh oil could do for him for the present.
“If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” (Luke 11:13). The power of the Holy Spirit comes through much earnest praying. In order to receive the power of the Holy Spirit, we must come to God empty of self, sin, and success. We must be clean vessels fit and meet for the Master’s use. We must spend enough time in prayer until we know that the lingering presence of the Holy Spirit has occupied all of us. David received it more than once. He knew that without this fresh anointing, he was useless and powerless for God to use.
