Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not. ~Jeremiah 33:3
One of the greatest challenges to our faith is having a prayer life that sees consistent and powerful answers from God. God desires for us to pray to Him. I believe all of us often feel convicted about not spending enough time in prayer, and about how weak and feeble our praying is sometimes. In Jeremiah 33:3, we have one of the great invitations to pray. In fact, it is an invitation to pray for unimaginable things. Our devotion this morning focuses on the invitation that God makes to us. This invitation says, “Give me a call!”
At the time when God gave this invitation, the city of Jerusalem had been overtaken by the Babylonians, and many of the Jews had been taken captive as prisoners. The temple and walls were destroyed. The leadership was weak and impotent. From an appearance standpoint, things looked discouraging. For us to experience the power of God working through our praying, we need our situation to be discouraging and beyond hope. However, it is at this low point in life when God calls to us to pray and to seek His face for our situation. Don’t let a discouraging appearance leave you defeated: “Call unto me,” God says!
God appeals to us to call out to Him. The image is of someone who is in need of rescue holding onto a rope and dangling from a height. It is an image of someone who is bobbing up and down in the ocean in need of rescue. It is the image of someone whose back is against the wall and out of human options. God says to call out to Him for help! God says to call out to Him as if it is an emergency. God says in the face of fear and disappointment, “Call unto me”! So often, we try to solve all of our own problems, and only when there does not seem to be a solution do we ask God for help. Beloved, it is time to call out to God as a loving Father Who is ready and able to meet our need!
God said He will show us great and mighty things which we know not of. Let us pray biblically. Biblical praying is when we ask, seek, and knock. It is asking in faith. It is the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man. Let us pray boldly. This is courageous and earnest praying. It is praying that is not ashamed to ask God for help. It is praying that is uninhibited. Let’s pray big! God said, “And show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” This is praying that is out-of-the-box. This is praying that is unprecedented. This is praying for the impossible to happen. It is praying knowing that everything depends upon God to do something.
Notice the emphasis on “great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” God will answer big, bold, and out-of-the-box praying more than once. These are answers where God changes the unchangeable; where God makes the impossible possible; where God makes a way where there was no way; where God opens doors that formerly were locked; where God does exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think. Demonstrable answers are answers that demonstrate God still is.
Does your prayer life need a lift and shot in the arm? It might be that you need to conform your praying to Jeremiah 33:3. It might be that you are in a desperate situation and out of options. Claim Jeremiah 33:3, and let God arise in your praying.
