He Continueth Ever

Today’s Verse:

But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. ~Hebrews 7:24

One of the major themes of Hebrews is the eternality of our Lord Jesus Christ. As much as the Jews revered Abraham, Moses, and the long succession of the Aaronic priesthood, all of them were mortal men who lived and died. Our Lord Jesus Christ, by His own testimony, said, “I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore.”

We see that Jesus is unceasing.

Four times in Hebrews 7 (vv. 3, 21, 24, 25), His eternal, ceaseless, and continual essence is referred to. “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” He is the same as God. He is the same with God. Jesus is without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life. He is unceasing in all His attributes: His holiness, His love, His mercies, His grace, and His power. Because He is eternal, time has no effect on Him. Jesus can never and will never cease from being God Who is eternal, infinite, and all-powerful.

We see that Jesus is unchanging.

Jesus has an unchangeable priesthood. He cannot be altered. He does not age or become obsolete. Unlike the earthly priests who offered a sacrifice for both their sins and the sin of the people, Jesus’ sacrificial death is complete in satisfying God’s demands for the sin of the world. Jesus did not die for sin on His part, because He had no sin. He entered this sin-cursed world with His same, sinless life. His sacrificial death is propitious and effectual for every sinner.

We see that Jesus is unfailing.

“Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.” He is unfailing in His salvation for every sinner. There is no sinner whom He cannot save. There is no sin that His blood cannot atone for. “He is able also to save them to the uttermost” guarantees salvation for everyone who repents of his sin and, by faith, calls on Jesus to save him. Jesus is unfailing in His intercession for every sinner. He ever liveth to make intercession. His high priestly ministry prays for us that we are not sifted as wheat and that our faith does not fail.

We see that Jesus is unending.

When He arose from the dead, He declared the death of death. An unending life encourages us with comfort for our aging, weary, and eventually broken bodies. An unending life encourages us that His presence is always with us. An unending life encourages us who live in mortal bodies, which, one day, we will put off, and will put on a glorified and eternal body.

We see Jesus, Who is unequal.

No one compares to Jesus in His comfort, His compassion, His care, His control, and His capability. No one is like Him in any form or fashion. He is unequal in His greatness and His glory. He saves to the uttermost. He is unequal in His longsuffering towards sinners. He loves every sinner with unlimited and unequal compassion. Truly, our Lord continueth ever. Don’t be blindsided by the lies of Satan, the blasphemy of this world against our Lord, or the opinions of those who refuse to submit to and trust in Him. Yes, Jesus Christ continueth ever!

Have a Christ-exalting God Morning!
