Thy righteousness also, O God, is very high, who hast done great things: O God, who is like unto thee! ~Psalm 71:19
David wrote Psalm 71 as an older man. He describes himself as being old and gray-headed. He asserts his hope and trust in the Lord since the days of his youth. In spite of various hardships and challenges, he proclaims, “O God, who is like unto thee!” He was saying that God is incomparable, matchless, and unsurpassable. As we meditate on this psalm, we, too, must come to a firm conviction that God is incomparable.
David declares the righteousness of God a minimum of five times. The righteousness of God is His glory. His righteousness speaks of His holy, sinless, perfect, infinite, and glorious essence. Only God is righteous. Among men, there is none righteous, no, not one. God does everything in righteousness. Because He does everything in righteousness, it points to His sovereignty in all things. He is incomparable because of His righteousness.
“Thou, which hast shewed me great and sore troubles, shalt quicken me again.” David experienced many trials during his lifetime, but through them all, he experienced God’s grace at work. Through God’s grace, he found a hiding place he could resort to (v. 2). God’s grace gave him sustaining hope (v. 5). God’s grace consistently sustained him since the days of his youth. “Thou shalt increase my greatness, and comfort me on every side.” God’s grace gave him comfort. It also grew him spiritually. His faith was stronger. He did not lose hope. God is incomparable because of His grace.
“My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing unto thee; and my soul, which thou hast redeemed.” God’s incomparable essence leads us to rejoice in the Lord and praise Him. I think of every time I sing “How Great Thou Art” and how it testifies of the greatness of God. I think of “All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name” and “To God Be the Glory,” and every time from a thankful heart I am praising God for being incomparable. When the joy cup of our life is filled with praise, we desire to praise the Lord often. We rejoice that God is incomparable.
“My tongue also shall talk of thy righteousness all the day long: for they are confounded, for they are brought unto shame, that seek my hurt.” When we are filled with rejoicing in God’s incomparable essence, we talk about His righteousness. When we witness for the Lord, we are testifying of His righteousness. If there is one area of our life in which we should be able to articulate clearly, it should be about His righteousness. We must see all things through the eye lens of His righteousness. Speaking of His righteousness compels us to help the unsaved realize that they can only attain righteousness through faith alone in our Lord Jesus Christ. Take time today to meditate on the incomparable essence of God. Speak boldly and enthusiastically of how our incomparable God can make a difference in the lives of those who do not know Him.
