Keep a Firm Grip
And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground. ~1 Samuel 3:19
Samuel is one of the great men of the Bible. He was both a prophet and a priest. His life spanned the end of the time of judges to the time of the kings. He was privileged to have anointed the first two kings of Israel. Samuel is noted as a great intercessor in Jeremiah 15:1. His very name means, “asked of God.” He was an answer to his mother’s prayers. As God’s prophet, we must not overlook his relationship to the Word of God. The Word of God had great preeminence in his life from the very outset, which began with his mother and continued when he studied under Eli the priest. Samuel shows us the importance of the Word of God in our life.
We see Samuel and a famine of the Word of God.
The opening verse in chapter 3 tells us that “the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision.” There was a scarcity of God’s Word. During the time of judges, men did that which was right in their own eyes. God’s Word was disrespected. Where disobedience and rebellion abound, there is apostasy and anarchy. A famine of the Word of God leads to the demise of a nation. Israel needed a revival of God’s Word from a trustworthy prophet.
We see Samuel and his favor of the Word of God.
Samuel “did let none of his words fall to the ground.” He did not waste God’s Word. He was not negligent concerning God’s Word. He was careful to study and meditate upon it. He memorized it. He made the Word of God very evident in his conversations. He referred to its authority often. He “did let none of his words fall to the ground.” How many of us waste God’s Word? We do not act upon it. We are neglectful of it. We live contrary to its truths. Don’t let God’s Word fall to the ground!
We see Samuel and his fervor with the Word of God.
We are told, “Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him.” Samuel could attribute his spiritual growth, productivity, and power to his fervor with the Word of God. He was a powerful preacher of God’s Word. His prayer life was powerful because of his time in the Word. The enemies of Israel were in awe of God’s presence in the nation because of Samuel’s love for the Word of God. When we have fervor for God’s Word as Samuel had, the evidence is a life that is a spiritual powerhouse.
As we consider Samuel and his relationship to the Word, we must ask the question: how about us? Do we seek to prosper in the Word, to protect the Word, to promote the Word, and to preach the Word? Samuel “did let none of his words fall to the ground.” Make your delight the Word of God!
Have a Word-filled God Morning!
