Precious Seed

He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him. ~Psalm 126:6

We have been considering things that are precious. We have considered how Jesus is precious. We have seen the precious things of Heaven. This morning, we will reflect on another commodity that is precious. We will reflect on the precious seed of God’s Word.

There is the sustenance of precious seed.

Seeds are the means by which our necessary food source is found. Seeds grow into wheat, which are harvested and ultimately become the staple of bread. They are a necessity of life. Jesus is the Bread of Life. A seed symbolically speaks to us about the Word of God. It is to be desired more than gold. It is a seed that is incorruptible. This seed saves souls! This seed creates faith and through faith, a man believes that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. Without sustenance, life will perish. Without the seed of the Word of God, souls will perish and spend eternity in Hell.

There is the scattering of precious seed.

Our passage this morning brings us to the timing of when seeds must be sown. The scattering of seeds is when winter is closing and springtime begins. Soil is tilled and prepared. The sower must scatter seeds in accordance with springtime to afford him time to harvest his crops in the summer and winter. He has a specific window of opportunity for scattering. We, too, have a specified window of opportunity for sowing the seed of God’s Word. We must sow now and not later. Our priorities must be rearranged to allow the time necessary for the precious seed to fall into hearts. As it is being scattered, we must pray that it will fall onto good soil where it will bring forth manifold fruit. We must be careful of precious seed being scattered on wayside soil, shallow soil, and thorny soil. We must scatter in much area. We must scatter as much as we can "while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work." We must scatter until every area has been covered.

There is the superlative of precious seed.

Our passage tells us that the sower will “doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.” Precious seed results in a guaranteed harvest! Precious seed brings great joy because of the harvested results. First, souls are saved! It will fall on good ground, and the good ground results in salvation decisions. Second, precious seed changes lives. It turns a sinner into a saint and a child of the devil into a child of God. It gives strength to someone who is weak to overcome the difficulties in life. It takes root downward and brings forth fruit upward.

There is the stewardship of precious seed.

God has entrusted us with the scattering of the gospel message. It must be sown indiscriminately and over a very wide area. We are to bear precious seed all over the world. We are not responsible for the soil, but we are responsible for the scattering. We must realize how precious God’s Word is. During the early days of Samuel’s training, we are told that the Word of God was precious in those days. It is even more precious today with a world population at 8 billion people. We must scatter as much of this precious seed as we can into the hearts of those who are lost and going to Hell.

Do you realize how precious this seed is? Take it and help to scatter it about! Remember it is seed that can change lives.

Have a seed-conscious God Morning!
