The City of God

Today’s Verse:

Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness. ~Psalm 48:1

Is there a bucket list of cities you hope to visit one day? Is there a city that stands out as your favorite city? When we think of a favorite city we think of iconic sites, eateries, people, and things to do. We prefer safe places. We prefer places where others share the same good opinion about that place. This morning, we are taking a glimpse of a future city. It is the city of all cities. We are looking at the city of God.

It is our Father’s city.

“Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness.” It is God’s city! It is His domain and kingdom. It is the citadel of praise to our God. It is the city of light where there is neither darkness nor night. It is a place of holiness. There is nothing seedy and shady found in this city. It is city with perfect laws. “Let mount Zion rejoice, let the daughters of Judah be glad, because of thy judgments.” It is the city of the redeemed of the Lord. It is a city where righteousness is the rule. It is situated high above all other cities. It is the city of God!

It is a favored city.

“Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.” It is a beautiful city. It is a happy city. Nothing gets outdated. Nothing wears out. Nothing becomes obsolete. There are no riots or protests in this city. Think about it: pearly gates, streets made of gold. No electricity or fuel sources are needed because the Lord Himself lights this city. Once you enter this city, there is nothing you want to go back to. It is incomparable. It is unconquerable. It is the city on a hill that can be seen for miles. It is the final destination for every person who places his faith in Jesus as Savior. It is home for the child of God.

It is a fortified city.

“God is known in her palaces for a refuge.” All who dwell in this city are safe. The enemies on the outside know that it is impenetrable. “Mark ye well her bulwarks, consider her palaces; that ye may tell it to the generation following.” Those who even think about the idea of attacking it shudder when they consider how awesome God is. Its walls cannot be scaled or toppled. Its defense system cannot be matched. You are secure and safe when you come inside this beautiful city.

It is a faithful city.

“For this God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death.” This city has no ending. It is a perpetual city. The residents make very clear in their testimony that God is their God forever. There are no elections in Heaven. There are no political threats or possible insurrections. As the city of God, His lovingkindness prevails. As the city of our God, God is our guide for life. We are fixed on placing our complete trust in God for every need that we have.

Let’s be read-up on Heaven! Let’s look with anticipation of when we enter Heaven forever. Let’s remember that this is the city of our God!

Have a heaven-enriched God Morning!
