The Daily Grind

Today's Verse:

Fulfil your works, your daily tasks.... ~Exodus 5:13b

Pharaoh told the Hebrews that they needed to do their daily tasks—we would call this the daily grind. Like it or not, the daily grind is what we must do each day in order to be productive. There are things we must accomplish that are essential for our work, school, and church. Even more important are the daily things we must do for a strong spiritual life. 

We must be daily in the getting of wisdom. 

“Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors” (Proverbs 8:34). There is happiness for the man who is daily in the Word of God, feeding his soul and adding needed wisdom to his life. We must be growing in wisdom daily. Wisdom is problem-solving. Wisdom is having foresight. Wisdom is being discerning in our thoughts. Wisdom is making the best of decisions and the right decisions. Wisdom is learning from our experiences. Wisdom is knowing God. We are to walk in wisdom toward them that are without. We are to let the Word of Christ dwell in us richly in all wisdom. 

We must be daily in our words. 

“Mine eye mourneth by reason of affliction: LORD, I have called daily upon thee, I have stretched out my hands unto thee” (Psalm 88:9). This is speaking of prayer. The psalmist, during a time of great affliction, committed himself to daily prayer until the trial was over. However, we should give ourselves to daily prayer whether we are in a trial or not. Our attitude should be that we will pray as if we are in a trial, or God might send us a trial to get us to pray. Praying without ceasing is praying daily and continuously. 

We must be daily in our work. 

“Fulfil your works, your daily tasks....” Each day of our lives should consist of a list of things to do. We should be industrious and productive. First, our daily tasks should involve people whom we can serve and help. Second, our daily tasks should entail serving our family. Third, our daily tasks should include being responsible and not always leaving things that require our attention until the last minute (e.g. paying bills, cleaning the house, and medical appointments). 

We must be daily in our withering. 

“I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily” (1 Corinthians 15:31). In order to be victorious over our flesh, we must die to self daily. Dying to self means we are crucifying the flesh and its lusts. The old nature must be nailed to the cross and not allowed to take control of our life and day. Dying to self is needed for overcoming pride, conceitedness, selfishness, worry, anger, and jealousy. 

We must be daily in our witness. 

“And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ” (Acts 5:42). Witnessing is telling others about Jesus and trying to see them get saved. We must schedule deliberate times to give out the gospel. We must plan to make visits to hot prospects we can win to Christ. We must look for unscheduled opportunities to give out tracts and get in a gospel witness. The Bible says that daily they ceased not. That is convicting to read! Daily witnessing keeps our hearts on fire for souls. Daily witnessing inspires others to go with us. Daily witnessing is being obedient to the heavenly vision. 

For the Christian, the daily grind is an opportunity to live for Jesus and experience His marvelous power in our lives.
