The Eternal God

Today’s Verse:

The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them. ~Deuteronomy 33:27

The occasion of our scripture reading this morning is the final days of Moses’ life. Moses lived 120 years. At his death, we are told that his eye was not dim, nor his strength abated. Amazingly, his vision was clear, and his strength never diminished from his younger days. Just before his passing, he had great words of encouragement for the children of Israel. He speaks of the eternal God. Moses was looking forward to spending eternity with God. He had a greater appreciation for the fact that God is infinite in His capacity and continuity. He needed to give Israel comfort and hope about their future after he was gone.

We see the FAITHFULNESS of an eternal God.

Jeremiah said that God’s mercies are new every day: “Great is thy faithfulness.” The fact that God is eternal encourages us about His attribute of faithfulness. As God, He is unchangeable. As God, He is longsuffering towards us. God is faithful, Who will not suffer us to be tempted beyond what we are able to bear. God is faithful and just to forgive us our sin and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. What a blessed thought that we will spend eternity with the God Who is eternal, infinite, and faithful to us!

We see the FORTRESS in an eternal God.

Moses declared, “The eternal God is thy refuge.” Years ago, Martin Luther penned the lyrics to a hymn he entitled, “A Mighty Fortress is our God.” A fortress is a place of safe cover. David said, “God is thy refuge and strength: a very present help in time of trouble.” He is a refuge that can be trusted. He is refuge that cannot be broken. He is a refuge that gives us confidence. Greater than their weaponry, the walls they constructed, and their mighty army was the fact that God would never fail them as their refuge. As a refuge, He was their strong tower. As a refuge, He was their hiding place. Realize today that the safest place you can be is under the cover of God’s wings for your refuge.

We see the FORTIFICATION of an eternal God.

“Then Moses said, underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.” Not only is God our refuge, but God is our protector and safeguard. God fights our battles for us. He thrusts the enemy from before us. He is the God of peace Who bruises Satan under our feet. He enables us to place our feet on the neck of the enemy and declare them defeated. Greater is He that is in us, than he that is in the world.

We see the FULFILLMENT from an eternal God.

“Happy art thou, O Israel: who is like unto thee, O people saved by the Lord, the shield of thy help, and who is the sword of thy excellency! and thine enemies shall be found liars unto thee; and thou shalt tread upon their high places.” We can live with peace and contentment because the Lord is on our side. David said, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.” We are blessed because the eternal God is our refuge.

Don’t let your circumstances and fears get the best of you. Rest in the fact that the eternal God is your refuge!

Have a confident God Morning!
