The Finger of God

Today's Verse:

Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh, This is the finger of God: and Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had said. ~Exodus 8:19

The human hand consists of five fingers: the thumb, index finger, middle finger, ring finger, and pinky. All five fingers are essential for grabbing and holding onto things. The more prominent finger we use every day is the index, or pointer, finger. When the magicians of Egypt said, “This is the finger of God,” they were referring to His index finger. It speaks to us about God and His authority. 

We see the finger of God and His sovereignty. 

God told Pharaoh through Moses that He would multiply the frogs in the land as chastening for not releasing the Israelites. When this happened, there was an abundance of frogs everywhere. If you can imagine it, there was nowhere frogs could not be found. They were on the ground, couches, chairs, and tables, and in pots, pans, and beds. Frogs were everywhere. The magicians said, “This is the finger of God.” God was in control of this situation. God was the One Who made it happen, and He was the only One Who could stop it. Sovereignty points to the fact that God is all-powerful and always in control. 

We see the finger of God upon the stone. 

God told Moses to write the Ten Commandments on two tablets of stone. For us, we would need a hammer and chisel to carve writing into stone. God did it with His finger. Today, God writes on the tables of our hearts. He wants His Word to leave a deep imprint within us for our transformation and benefit. May our hearts be softened and tender for God to write His Word in our conscience and heart whenever we read, memorize, meditate on, study, and hear it. 

We see the finger of God upon the stucco. 

The Babylonian king, Belshazzar, hosted a large drinking party. He took the vessels of God that his grandfather had taken from Judah and poured wine into them. The fingers of a man’s hand appeared and started writing on the wall. We get our idiom “the writing on the wall” from this incident. God’s finger wrote His judgement against Belshazzar. God told him that his days were numbered and that his kingdom would be taken from him. God’s finger points at our sin and disobedience. It clearly indicates when we have fallen and the repentance required on our part. 

We see the finger of God upon the sand. 

The Pharisees took a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They brought her to Jesus to see what He would do. Jesus saw through the hypocrisy of these men, stooped down, and began writing in the sand. He was fulfilling Jeremiah 17:13, which says, “They that depart from me shall be written in the earth.” First, I believe Jesus was writing out the sins of these men. Second, when he stooped down to write the second time, I believe He wrote the names of these men next to their sins. In effect, Jesus was demonstrating His righteousness and holiness. There is nothing that can be hid from Him. He was writing up these men for their sins against God the Father. 

The finger of God points at us and reveals who we really are and what God expects of us. When His finger points at you, be sure to come clean and draw close to His side.
