The Gift of Wisdom
Today’s Verse:
For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. ~Proverbs 2:6
Proverbs is known as the Book of Wisdom. When Solomon became king of Israel, the Lord appeared to him in a dream and asked him what He could for him. Solomon was a humble young man. He asked the Lord for wisdom so that he might be able to judge God’s people in a proper and righteous way. The Lord blessed him with such wisdom that he was wiser than any other man alive during his time. As we begin our second day in the way of wisdom, we are taking time to examine the gift of wisdom.
We see a providential disbursement.
The gift of wisdom is God’s gift to you. It is a gift from Heaven. It is a gift that is favorable. It is good and perfect. It is a gift that is Fatherly. It comes down the Father above, in Whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. It is a gift that is free. God gives wisdom liberally and abundantly. It is a gift that is to be furthered. It is to be put to good use and for the glory of God.
We see the prioritized decision.
We are called upon to seek after wisdom. Three times, Solomon tells his son, “If....” The condition for the receiving of wisdom is placed upon us. "If thou wilt receive...." "If thou criest...." "If thou seekest...." We must have a sincere and hungering desire for wisdom. We must pray for it. We must hunt for it through our experience and when preached to. We must decide that wisdom is the highest priority of the Christian life. Are you begging God to give you wisdom? Are you asking God to show you what you should be learning from an experience that He has given to you? Do you read so that you can acquire wisdom from other people?
We see the prudent discretion.
Wisdom enables us to make the best and most appropriate decisions for our life and the lives of those around us. Wisdom enables us to walk by faith in confidence even when we cannot go beyond the next step. Wisdom helps us know the path to not take when we come to the fork in the road. Wisdom enables us to make a decision for our future and have God’s peace when that decision is made. When we have God’s wisdom, we are not making blind decisions about the next step.
We see the protected deliverance.
The gift of wisdom delivers us from evil people. It delivers us from evil men who are trying to get us to join with them in doing evil. It delivers us from the lure of the seductress who is trying to entice us into illicit and immoral relationships and lifestyles. It delivers us from living to satisfy our flesh and from finding short-term pleasure in sin for a season. It enables us to differentiate the short term from the long term. It enables us to think big picture and realize the danger that we would be in if we went ahead with that temptation.
We see the profitable dividends.
The gift of wisdom places us in the way of good men and in the path of the righteous. It enables us to live in stability and rest within the land. This means we are protected from our enemies and the unexpected advances of those who are hiding and waiting to hinder us. The gift of wisdom pays profitable dividends for our life and the lives of those closest to us.
Wisdom is God’s gift. Seek for it. Don’t waste it! Don’t look for cheap substitutes! It is a gift that never becomes obsolete or useless. Make it your goal to seek after wisdom today!
