From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. ~Psalm 61:2
Are you feeling overwhelmed? Being overwhelmed is feeling like the weight of the world is upon you. It feels like you are being suffocated and cannot breathe. It is the fearful feeling of a circumstance that is so pressing and large that you are unsure of what to do and where to go. If you have been overwhelmed, you know how that feeling is. However, there is good news for us. This morning, we will see how we can get over being overwhelmed.
“Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer. From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed:” Instead of languishing in our problem, we must come to God immediately by way of prayer. David prayed a prayer that drew the attention of God. It was an urgent prayer. It was an understandable prayer. He was crying out for help. He told the Lord in no uncertain terms that his heart is overwhelmed with his problem. When you are overwhelmed don’t delay: call out to God in prayer!
“Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” David felt like he has been on a slippery slope. He felt like the ground underneath his feet is very unstable. He placed the entirety of his faith on the Lord. Lead me! And not only lead me, but lead me to the Rock that is higher than me. He needed to get to higher ground. He needed to get to where his footing was stable and safe. There was only one place for this: the Rock that was higher than him. That Rock is Jesus! When our trust is on our ability to solve the problem or in someone else, the situation is none the better. Get to Jesus! Only on Him are you safe and secure. Only on Him can you weather the storm that is beating upon you.
“I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings. Selah.” David resolved that the safest place for him to be was in the Lord’s covering and care. David resolved that the best place for him to be was in the tabernacle of God. When you are overwhelmed, the church is a great place to be in. You hang upon every message to get you to the next level. You realize that God is with you in the tabernacle, and in Him alone is your comfort and strength. Faith must resolve that God alone can protect and get us out of the difficulties we encounter.
“For thou, O God, hast heard my vows: thou hast given me the heritage of those that fear thy name. Thou wilt prolong the king's life: and his years as many generations. He shall abide before God for ever: O prepare mercy and truth, which may preserve him.” David had the peace of heart in knowing that his prayers were answered. He knew that God had preserved him through his circumstance. David knew that God did for him as He did with the faithful predecessors before him. He knew that he had an open audience with God for the remainder of his life. He saw firsthand that the problem that overwhelmed him was minimized by God’s intervention in his life.
Psalm 61 gives us the medicine and model for overcoming being overwhelmed. Let God have your problem, and trust in the cover of His wings.
