The Judgment of God

Today's Verse:

But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things. ~Romans 2:2

The idea of appearing before a judge commands our respect and attention. A judge is someone who is empowered to make a decision regarding a matter of civil or criminal ramifications. After evaluating a cause of action, the evidence submitted, testimonies of witnesses, and final concluding remarks, a judge will decide for or against the individual being tried. This morning, we are considering a matter of sobering consequences: the judgment of God.

There is the fact of judgment.

Judgment is inevitable for every sinner. “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27). In fact, every man has built within him a sense of consequence or judgment for his actions. The fact that we live in a society with laws reinforces the idea of accountability for our actions. Judgment is according to truth: there will be lies or untruths at judgment time. “Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine” (1 Timothy 1:9-10). The unrepentant sinner faces final judgment at the Great White Throne of God. Judgment is inevitable and coming.

There is the fate in judgment.

At the Great White Throne, the sinner will stand before a holy and righteous God to give account of his sin and what he did with the opportunity of accepting Christ as his Savior. The books will be opened, which will disclose every detail of the sinner’s life and what excuses he made for putting off accepting Christ. The book of life will be opened at the last, and sadly his name will be missing. He will then be cast into a Lake of Fire where he will spend all of eternity. He will burn in torment and agony for having rejected Christ. He will remain in that terrible place for all of eternity with no hope for escape. What a frightening fate!

There is the forbearance of judgment.

Every sinner can avoid the judgment of God by repenting of his sins and believing on the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior. “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life” (John 5:24). Christ through His death has paid the penalty for sin and makes possible the avoidance of judgment if He is accepted as Savior. Fathom what Paul says in Romans 5:8-9: “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.”

There is the fear of judgment.

Every sinner must fear appearing before the Great White Throne Judgment. Every Christian must fear appearing before the Judgment Seat of Christ where he will give account for the things done in his body, whether it be good or bad (2 Corinthians 5:10). For the Christian, the Judgment Seat of Christ is an evaluation of our works that we did for the Lord in this life. “Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: For our God is a consuming fire” (Hebrews 12:28-29).

Judgment is coming! Sinner, accept Christ today before it is too late. Christian, live the rest of your time to the will of God. Live soberly, and walk as children of the light.

Have a circumspect God Morning!
