The Still Waters
Today’s Verse:
…He leadeth me beside the still waters. ~Psalm 23:2b
Do you ever go hiking? If so, do you have a place that you enjoy hiking to that has a hidden water source? A place where water flows into from the melting snow of winter and provides a cool, refreshing spot to cool your feet, wash your hands, and to park and rest? David was a man very well acquainted with the rugged wilderness of Judea. As a shepherd he had water sources he would lead his sheep to so that they would be properly hydrated. As a believer going through rough times, David learned how to lean upon the Chief Shepherd for his daily needs. David refers to the still waters that the Lord led him to. There are valuable lessons for us when we come to the place of still waters.
There is the Lord of the still waters.
“He leadeth me beside the still waters.” In the walk of faith, we will eventually come to the place where God has to lead us to the water source for us to abide at. It teaches us that the Lord is in control. When God told Elijah to go to the brook Cherith his thoughts might have been “this is a water source that will dwindle and dry up.” Every day as he drank from that brook his thinking went from rejection to tolerance to acceptance. He learned that God was the Lord of that water brook. A dwindling brook does not change God’s omnipotence. In the same way your dwindling strength, savings, and situation does not change God in His power.
There is the love at the still waters.
Still water sources are where we realize how much God loves us. It is there where all distractions are removed. It is there where our thoughts are not polluted. It is there God speaks to us in a still small voice. Our soul comes under the powerful draw of God’s love! Likewise, we respond with great love to God. “As the hart panteth after the water brook, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.”
There is the leverage from the still waters.
Still waters are a place where faith is developed. Think of how the faith of David was built up at the still waters and prepared him for his encounter with Goliath. Think of how the faith of Elijah was built up at Cherith and prepared him for Zarephath and Carmel. Think of how the faith of Joshua was built up when the water from the rock became still waters! Still waters are also a place where Spirit supply is garnered. Everyone who comes to the still waters realizes “not my might, nor by power, but by my spirit saith the Lord.” We need more of the Holy Spirit’s power and filling. Still waters are where you get it! Still waters are where it flows into your soul! Still waters are where revival fires start and keep on being sustained!
When is the last time you were at the still waters? Today you need the Lord to lead you to the still waters so that you can draw from its cool refreshing resource for your soul. Let your soul park beside these waters and draw deeply and frequently until God says it’s time to move on. Still waters are needed so that out of your belly shall flow rivers of living waters!
