The Trusted Name

Today's Verse:
Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God. ~Psalm 20:7
In advertising, a company tries to successfully convey an idea about its product or service to compel consumers to purchase it. One such branding cliché is the use of the term “the trusted name.” Companies that use this description have consistently successful results backed by consumer testimonials of their trustworthiness. This morning, we are greatly encouraged by the most comprehensive trusted name: the name of the Lord!
We see the distress.
“The LORD hear thee in the day of trouble.” Trouble is unavoidable. Job said, “Man that is born of woman is of few days, and full of trouble.” Trouble is when circumstances have us in a very uncomfortable place. Our backs are against the wall. The waters are rising and are at our neck. We are running from the coming tsunami and realizing we cannot outrun it. We feel like we are out of options and our world is caving in. Distress brings out what is really in us. Distress reveals what kind of Christian we really are.
We see the dependence.
“Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.” The name of the Lord is a trusted name! Solomon said, “The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.” The psalmist was speaking from previous experience. He was declaring his confidence that there is safety in the name of the Lord. God told Abraham that He was his shield and exceeding great reward. The name of the Lord reveals to us His many attributes and how they work on our behalf. His name does not fail us. The psalmist may have had in mind the time when Israel was crossing the Red Sea and the mighty Egyptian army was behind them with their chariots and horses. All they could do was trust and believe in the Lord’s name for their deliverance and safety.
We see the dependability.
“We will rejoice in thy salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners: the LORD fulfil all thy petitions.” The psalmist declared the glorious victory accomplished through the name of the Lord. In fact, he established banners or flags that unashamedly told friend and foe alike that the name of the Lord can be trusted. First, we must call on the name of the Lord in order to be saved from our sins. “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). We must believe in the name of Jesus Christ for our salvation. Second, we pray in the name of the Lord Jesus for results. “And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son” (John 14:13).
We see the deliverance.
“Now know I that the Lord saveth his anointed; he will hear him from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand.” The psalmist was victorious in his day of trouble. He had experienced repeatedly the working of the Lord on his behalf. He had called on the name of the Lord for his safety, his strength, and his success. His deliverance was by the hand of the Lord. No other power could help him. No other power could sustain him. No other power could overcome his distress. He spoke with confidence and complete assurance of the Lord’s power on his behalf.
The Lord’s name is a trusted name. His name cannot fail us! His name is reliable and powerful. This morning, bless the name of the Lord and raise the banners of the Lord high so that all may know that the trusted name for our life is the Lord’s name!
