Where Are Your Feet Pointed?

I thought on my ways, and turned my feet unto thy testimonies. I made haste, and delayed not to keep thy commandments. ~Psalm 119:59-60

The psalmist was going through a tough time. He said in v. 61, "The bands of the wicked have robbed me." He was referring to a recent situation where he was outnumbered and taken by surprise. It could have been an occurrence while he was traveling alone through a mountainous area where robbers hide out and take advantage of travelers. It could also refer to an instance of being spiritually attacked by demons. Whatever it may have been, it made him think about which way his feet were pointing. Our devotion this morning is a good reminder of how we must consider our ways and make sure that we are headed in the right direction.

We see an intense reflection.

He said, “I thought on my ways.” He took some time to consider how he had been living for God and the direction that he was heading in. Perhaps one of the most neglected areas of Christian living is to sit and think about where we have been, what we are doing, and which way we are going. The psalmist realized that he was not where he needed to be in his spiritual life. He saw that there was unconfessed sin in his life. He saw that he had been cutting corners in his walk with God. He saw that he had unresolved matters with other people. He realized that he was moving farther from God and not closer. He had a time of intense reflection.

We see an intentional reversal.

After a long and serious time of thinking about his life, we see him making an immediate reversal. He said, “I turned my feet unto thy testimonies.” He got his direction realigned with God’s Word. He was making the mistake that many Christians make. They set their direction without looking at the compass. God’s Word is the compass for our life. Where God points us is where we are to follow. He pointed his feet in the direction that God wanted him to walk in and ceased from going in his own direction.

We see an immediate resolve.

As soon as he got his feet pointed in the right direction, he made haste to obey God’s Word. Sometimes, we do not realize how much we slack off when it comes to obedience. Sometimes, we do not realize that our belief and behavior do not match up. Sometimes, we drag our feet and procrastinate in doing what God says we should be doing. Obedience to God requires an immediate resolve. We are to move quickly and not delay in keeping the law of the Lord.

Which way are your feet pointed? Are we in submission to the words that say, “This is the way, walk ye in it”? Are we going the flesh way instead of the faith way? Are we ignoring certain commands because they are not convenient to obey? Have we been putting off some things that we know we should be doing? Will it take a band of robbers to upset our life and direction to get us back on the right track? Take time today to think on your ways, and be sure that your feet are turned unto His testimonies.

Have a contemplative God Morning!
