Children of the Day
Today’s Verse:
Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. ~1 Thessalonians 5:5
Children bear a resemblance of their parents. There are unique characteristics between children and their parents that distinguish them as family. The same can be said for everyone who has placed their faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior. Every Christian becomes a son of God at the moment of salvation. In our scripture this morning from I Thessalonians 5, we also see that we are classified as children of light. When you get saved, you go from being a child of darkness to becoming a child of light. Eph. 5:8 tells us, “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light.” Let us see this morning the traits that are associated with us being children of the day.
We are a people who are redeemed.
As children of the day, we have been saved from our sins by the shed blood, sacrificial death, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ from the dead. We have been purchased by His blood out of the slave market of sin. Our redemption has secured us complete and total forgiveness of sins. We are no longer children who are in darkness, but children of the day. We are new creatures in Christ: old things are passed away, all things are become new. We are justified, redeemed, and sanctified in Jesus Christ.
We are a people who are to radiate.
As children of the day, we are to walk in the light, as He is in the light. We are called to be the light of the world. We are to shine brightly as beacons in this world of darkness. Jesus said, “Let your light so shine that men may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Don’t be a candle placed under a bed: be a light that shines brightly and very far. We are to bring the light of the gospel to the dark places where Christ needs to be preached and made known.
We are a people who will be raptured.
“But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief…For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ.” The Rapture is when the Lord Jesus Christ shall suddenly return in the sky to snatch out every born-again believer. His coming will be like a thief in the night. It will be swift, sudden, and certain. The term “Rapture” refers to the fact that we will not go through the Great Tribulation, also referred to as the great day of God’s wrath. Children of the day are mercifully spared from the wrath of God, which will be poured out on earth during the Tribulation.
We are a people who should be ready.
“Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober…But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.” Readiness implies being vigilant and alert. We are to live in a constant spirit of revival. Paul emphasizes the importance of being sober. Being sober is not being under the control and influence of substances such as alcohol and drugs. Watchfulness is best applied through an intense and active prayer life. Jesus told His disciples, “Watch and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.” We must be careful not to allow sin, our situation, indulgences, or even some relationships to cloud our judgment and make us unready for Jesus’ return.
