Today's Verse:

The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks; ~Proverbs 30:26

Conies are small, rodent-like creatures with long ears that have similarities to rabbits. They are rock-dwelling animals. They are one of four very small animals or insects that Solomon uses as a powerful life example for us. This morning, let us see the importance of being Christian conies.

We see the conies and their weakness.

“The conies are but a feeble folk.” Conies are small, herbivorous animals. They are vulnerable to attack on the ground and from above in the skies. If they are out in the open too long, they become open prey. If they are not careful, they will become part of another animal’s food chain. They have no natural defense mechanism. They are a picture of the weakness of every believer. We are always at risk of attack from our spiritual enemies. We are weak when it comes to our praying, our Bible reading, our ability to resist temptation. We are weak when it comes to pride. We can become overconfident and forget that we are weak. The coney knows by instinct that it is feeble and weak. Let us remember that, without the Lord, we are weak.

We see the conies and their wisdom.

“There be four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise.” The conies are one of four animals or insects that Solomon identified as being exceeding wise. They are wise because they know what they are and what they are not. They are wise because they do not want to be devoured by lurking predators. They are wise because they are noted for their community and not their individuality. If you are not wise, who cares how much money you have? If you are not wise, who cares how much fun you have? If you are not wise, who cares where you graduated from? Solomon did not speak about wise people. He saw this little, feeble animal and saw wisdom in how it conducted itself, how it lived, and how it avoided being taken as prey.

We see the conies and their whereabouts.

“Yet make they their houses in the rocks.” The conies make their dwellings high above their enemies. They make their refuge the rocks on higher ground. They make their houses in the rocks. If you want to escape from being devoured, you have to live high above where the enemy cannot get to you. Jesus is the solid rock upon which we stand. The wise man built his house upon the rock. When you build your life on Jesus, your foundation is solid and sure. Let Jesus be your shelter in the time of storm. Let Jesus be your dwelling place far above the danger line where Satan, the world, and the flesh will attack you.

We see the conies and their watch.

The conies not only dwell safely in the rocks, but they also have a better vantage point. Where they live, they are able to watch and know what is happening below. Jesus told us to watch and pray, lest we enter into temptation. We need to watch and get our word from God. We need to watch because the Lord’s coming draweth nigh.

Take a moment this morning, and consider well the conies. They are little, but they teach us much wisdom for our Christian life.

Have a wisdom-filled God Morning!
