Today's Verse:

In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul. ~Psalm 94:19

This morning, we are meditating on a powerful conclusion that the psalmist came to during a time of chastening from the Lord. Chastening is when God disciplines His children for disobedience and unrepentant sin in their lives. God uses chastening to help us realize how much He loves us. It is also through this process that we also learn about the comforts of God.

We see the solace in God’s comfort.

“In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.” The psalmist was overwhelmed with fear about his situation. He felt like God was not working fast enough for him. He asked, “How long, Lord?” Whenever our thoughts are on us, our circumstances make us cower. Yet, the psalmist allowed his thoughts to be filled with the Lord, His mighty works, and His loving goodness. “Thy comforts delight my soul”! The God of all comfort gives grace to strengthen us. The God of all comfort gives us peace where there was restlessness. His comfort restores the joy to our soul. His comfort overcomes our negative thoughts with the confidence that He is in control.

We see the safeguard in God’s comfort.

“But the LORD is my defense; and my God is the rock of my refuge.” There is safety for us in God’s comfort. God is our defensive lineman Who keeps the enemy from further attacking us. Psalm 91:4 tells us, “He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.” The enemy might come close, but he will not touch us. Not only is God our defense, but He is also our refuge. “The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe” (Proverbs 18:10). “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1).

We see the stability from God’s comfort.

“When I said, My foot slippeth; thy mercy, O LORD, held me up.” He experienced God’s mercy in his time of crisis. He realized it is because of God’s mercies that we are not consumed. He realized that God has pity upon His children. Like Jeremiah, he experienced that God’s mercies are new every morning. God’s comfort and mercies kept him from bowing to his circumstances. When things are going downhill and spinning out of control, let God’s mercy hold you up.

We see the strategy in God’s comfort.

“Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O LORD, and teachest him out of thy law.” In the midst of God’s comfort, he realized God’s purpose in chastening. He did not blame God for his joy that had been missing because of disobedience. Happy is the man whom God chastens. “Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.”

Chastening brings us full circle about God, His comfort, and His loving ways of bringing us close to Him. The God of all comfort touches our life where and when we need it most. “In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.”

Have a comforted God Morning!
