Nothing but the Truth

Today’s Verse:

Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. ~John 17:17

Our Scripture this morning is taken from the prayer of the Lord Jesus the night before He was crucified. He prayed that His disciples, those who followed Him at that time and all who henceforth would call Him Lord, would live in truth. Truth is such an important theme; it is mentioned twenty two times in the Gospel of John. We live in a time when people are more willing to believe lies than the truth. This morning, we want to consider the importance of nothing but the truth.

There is the Persona of truth.

Jesus is the only One Who could make the claim, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” The very proclamation of the Apostle John under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit is that Jesus, upon His incarnation, was full of grace and truth. Jesus is nothing but the truth! He is the very Persona of truth. No one else ever has and ever can make this proclamation. Jesus' words, teaching, and life were all in truth.

There is the principle of truth.

Truth is an absolute. Truth is utmost honesty and righteousness. Where there is truth, lies and falseness are defeated. Where there is truth, integrity prevails. Where there is truth, justice is right. Truth enables us to live without fear or anxious care. Where there is truth, the light shines the brightest. Where there is truth, lies and deceitfulness cannot prevail. Truth is the absolute of conduct. Truth is the means by which the gospel message shows men their need of a Savior.

There is the provision of truth.

“Thy word is truth.” God’s Word is the ultimate and only trustworthy source for truth. God’s Word cannot lie because God cannot lie! God’s Word will not deceive us. God’s Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. As truth, God’s Word tells us what is right and leads us into that which is right. Without the Word of God, we lack a compass for our path and protection for our souls.

There is the purifying through truth.

Jesus prayed that all of His disciples would be sanctified through the truth of the Word of God. God’s Word is fuller’s soap that cleanses our conscience and soul from sin. It keeps us in the shadow of God’s holiness. It keeps us from error and apostasy. Of the many things Jesus prayed for, at the top of the list was that the truth of His Word would continuously sanctify us. This demands constant vigilance on our part in making sure we are allowing the Word of God to constantly purge our heart and reveal to us those areas in need of His help.

There is the product in truth.

The truth sets us free! The truth keeps us from bondage. The truth allays our fears. The truth points us in the right direction. The truth delivers us from anxious care. The truth enables our relationships to be transparent. The truth makes us better Christians. The truth strengthens our faith and intensifies our prayer life.

Are you allowing the truth to sanctify you? Are you allowing the truth to shape your soul life into that which is pleasing to God? Buy the truth and sell it not!

Have a truth-filled God Morning!
