Today’s Verse:

As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste. He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love. ~Song of Solomon 2:3-4

Title: One of a Kind

Subject: Matchlessness of Christ

Text: Song of Solomon 2:3-4

The term “one-of-a-kind” speaks of someone or something that is unique, special, and matchless. The second chapter of the Song of Solomon uses various phrases to describe how matchless and unique our Lord Jesus Christ is. When we consider who He is, what He has accomplished, and what He is still doing, He is unquestionably one-of-a-kind.

Our Lord Jesus Christ is one-of-a-kind in His PERSON.

We see the description, “As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons.” In an earlier verse, He is described as a lily among the thorns. Jesus is unquestionably the God-Man. As the Son of Man, He experienced hunger and thirst. As the Son of God, He is living water to the spiritually thirsty, and the bread of life to those who are spiritually hungry. As the Son of Man, He experienced temptation just as we do. Yet, as the Son of God, He was tempted in all points, yet without sin. As the Son of God, He touched the lives of those who were in sorrow and grief. As the Son of Man, He was a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. As the Son of Man, He experienced death and was buried in a borrowed tomb. As the Son of God, He rose triumphantly from the dead. Jesus is one-of-a-kind in His Person.

Our Lord Jesus Christ is one-of-a-kind in His PROTECTION.

“I sat down under his shadow with great delight…” His shadow is a place of refuge for every child of God. He is our hiding place from the arrows of the enemy. He is our shelter in the time of storm. He is our shield and buckler when our foes attack us. In His shadow, we find rest for our weary souls. In His shadow, we find a shade from the fiery trials that come our way. In His shadow, we find a place where our souls can be replenished. There is safety under His shadow. There is relief under His shadow. There is contentment under His shadow.

Our Lord Jesus Christ is one-of-a-kind in His PERFORMANCE.

The idea of a tree and the security of His shadow speak to me about His sacrificial and substitutionary death on the cross for every sinner. His tree was the cross to which He was nailed. He shed His blood as the payment price for every sinner. He stands out as the propitiation for the sins of the whole world. He was the Just dying for the unjust that He might bring us to God. “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed,” I Pet. 2:24. Unlike any other man who died on a cross, only Jesus’ crucifixion satisfies the just demands of God for every sinner. He is the perfect Lamb of God which takes away the sins of the world.

Our Lord Jesus Christ is one-of-a-kind in His PROVISION.

“He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.” When we take Jesus as our Savior, we enter into a special relationship with Him. We see an idea of a wedding feast where a marriage is culminated at this banquet. At the Marriage Supper of the Lamb, His bride, the church, culminates its betrothal to Christ in Heaven. It is the apex of His love for us. He is the Bridegroom finalizing the eternal relationship with all who have received Him as Savior. We have everything we need in Jesus. His banner over us is the ensign that signifies He is not ashamed to call us His beloved, and to share with us His spiritual blessings in Heavenly places.

Jesus is uniquely God! He is unparalleled, unmatched, and unequalled. Rejoice this morning that He is one-of-a-kind!

Have a Christ-filled God morning!
