Prince of Peace
Today’s Verse:
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. ~Isaiah 9:6
In Isaiah 9:6, the prophetic announcement of Christ coming into this world by way of a miraculous birth is given to us. In this announcement, we are given six wonderful names that describe His deity and ministry to every sinner who places faith in Him for salvation. This morning, let us consider the name "The Prince of Peace."
We see the atonement in His name.
“And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven” (Colossians 1:20). Every sinner is at enmity with God. Our sins have separated between us and God (Isaiah 59:2). Jesus became "the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). It was necessary for Jesus to shed His blood for our sins and for our complete redemption. He made peace with us and God through His shed blood on the cross. It could not be done any other way. His sacrificial act reconciled us to God. It demonstrates love that we do not deserve!
We see the accomplishment through His name.
“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1). Saving peace is accomplished when a sinner places his complete faith in our Lord Jesus for his sins. We refer to this as justification. This is a legal term that has the idea of our sins being both exonerated and expunged. Justification means God looks on us as if we had never sinned. We have been cleansed from our sins by the blood of our Lord Jesus (1 John 1:7). Once we have exercised repentance towards God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, we are no longer under condemnation. Being justified means there is freedom, release, and a favored standing with God.
We see the access through His name.
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7). When we get saved, we have peace with God. However, we will still have struggles and difficulties in this life. God assures us His peace in our lives when we bring our prayers and supplications with thanksgiving to Him. When we come to Him with our burdens, He gives us peace in the midst of our storm. It is peace that is tender, that is timely, and that keeps us from falling apart.
We see the authority in His name.
“Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant” (Hebrews 13:20). He is the God of peace. Satan will try to counterfeit God’s peace. The world will try to substitute God’s peace. However, Christ is the Author and Authority of peace. It is a reminder that He sits on His throne and no power can unsettle Him. It is a reminder that through Him, we have overcome the world. It is a reminder that He gives perfect peace to them whose mind is stayed on Him.
Jesus is our Prince of Peace! Give Him control of every situation and opportunity in your life. Do not fall for worldly substitutes or satanic ploys. He is our peace, having broken down the middle wall of partition between us and God.
