Saved! Saved!

Today's Verse:

These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. ~1 John 5:13

The greatest fear of some believers, who are not well grounded in God’s Word, is the matter of their eternal security. Every now and then, someone will confide in me that they struggle with whether they are really saved. This morning, we are considering the important matter of the assurance of salvation or eternal security. Let us see how we know for sure that we have eternal life. 

There is the record. 

“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” The Word of God is God’s testimony to us that we are saved. There are many verses of Scripture — John 3:16-18; John 5:24; John 10:28; Romans 8:1; Romans 10:9-10, 13; 1 Peter 1:3-5; and 1 John 5:11-13 to name a few — that give us confidence of our eternal security. We are saved once we have repented of our sins and believed in our heart that Jesus died for our sins and rose again from the dead. God’s Word is His written guarantee of our salvation. 

There is the removal. 

“In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins.” When Christ is accepted as Savior, all of our sins — past, present, and future — are forgiven and washed away in Jesus’ blood. Remember that all of our sins were judged on Him when He suffered and died on the cross. Even though we still sin after we are saved, we can confess our sins to God and He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). 

There is the residence. 

According to John 14:2, Heaven is God’s house. The moment we get saved, Jesus prepares a mansion for us in Heaven. Everlasting life means we live forever in Heaven. It means we put off this mortal body and put on immortality. Heaven is the final destiny after this life for everyone who is saved. Heaven is our home. The psalmist speaks of Heaven by saying, “Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God. Selah.” In Heaven, it will be said, “This and that man was born in her.” Heaven is only attainable when we are born again (John 3:3-5). 

There is the Resident. 

“In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory” (Ephesians 1:13-14). The moment we get saved, the Holy Spirit indwells us. First, He places a seal on us to indicate we belong to God. Second, His indwelling is the earnest of our future inheritance. This means His indwelling is the down payment and evidence of our eternal glory. 

There is the relationship. 

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name” (John 1:12). When we get saved, we become sons of God. We are heirs with God and joint-heirs with Jesus Christ. We become members of God’s family through spiritual adoption (Galatians 4:4-6).
