Today’s Verse:
For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. ~Hebrews 5:12
Meat is a good source of protein for proper nutrition. There are some people who feel strongly that they need to have meat at every meal, and do not limit the portion of meat they consume. Even though some would prefer eating a different source of protein like beans, meat is accepted in our main stream diets as necessary for building strength. Paul speaks about the importance of the “meat” of the Word.
We see the representation.
The usage of the term “meat” in this passage is speaking about the more intricate doctrines and matters of the Word of God. When we start out in the Christian life, we can only “eat of the milk of the Word,” or the things that are not difficult to understand. However, as we mature we should gravitate from the milk of the word to the meat of the word. The reference to “meat” is indicative of a Christian who is maturing in God’s Word.
We see the reluctance.
“Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing. For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.” The Hebrew believers were slothful in their receiving and study of the Word and were spiritually declining. The inability to receive the “meat” of the Word meant that they were very simple in their comprehension and developing. “For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.” They need others to teach and nurture them along.
We see the responsibility.
“For when for the time ye ought to be teachers.” These Hebrew believers had been saved long enough that they should have been at a level where they could teach others the Word, but they couldn’t! Bring at a teacher level indicates the ability to discern good from evil. It is indicative of being able to understand the mind of God. It points to a believer who is blessed with the unlocking of God’s Word in their life. God desires that we study to show ourselves approved unto God. We are to diligently search the Scriptures. We are to be like the Bereans who “received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” Stop being someone who has to be spoon fed the Word of God, and dig deeply for yourself.
We see the result.
“But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” It takes time, discipline and constant meditation and study to attain “full age” or maturity. This is what Paul calls the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ: This level of spirituality blesses us with spiritual discernment. We have full knowledge of good and evil. We can see through the darkened glass clearly. We are wiser the men of the world. We do not make wrong decisions. We can say that we have been warned, and in the keeping of them there is great reward.
As Christians we should all be “meat lovers”. Don’t be milk-fed Christian. There are innumerable blessings to be uncovered as you commit to being a student of God’s Word.
Have a meat enriched God morning!
