The Wells of Salvation
Today’s Verse:
Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation. ~Isaiah 12:3
Wells are necessary water sources. In the arid, hot desert areas of the Middle East, a well was a source for personal consumption, farm irrigation, and watering the herds and flocks. Entire communities depended upon wells for their survival. The daily task of drawing water from the wells was a reminder that without that well, life would be miserable. This morning, we are considering what Isaiah called the wells of salvation. The wells of salvation are a daily source of refreshment, nourishment, and sustenance for our spiritual life.
The wells of salvation are the place of conversion.
A person’s first experience with the wells of salvation is when he, by faith, accepts the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior. Jesus met a woman of Samaria at a well. He told her, “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” This well became the place where she confessed that she was a sinner and, by faith, accepted Christ as her Savior. Your first drink from the wells of salvation occurs when you unreservedly accept Jesus as Savior.
The wells of salvation are the place of connection.
These wells are the place where we meet with the Lord. We are to draw water out of the wells every day to sustain us. Jesus said in John 7:38, “He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” The evidence of a well-watered Christian life is whether you have spent time in the well. The outflow of a life is an indicator on the intake of the life. If my intake from the wells of salvation is substantial, the outflow of a Spirit-controlled life will be evident.
The wells of salvation are the place of confidence.
In Isaiah 12:2 it says, “Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.” Dwight L. Moody's favorite verse was this verse. He used to say: "You can travel first class or second class to Heaven. Second class is, 'What time I am afraid, I will trust.' First class is, 'I will trust, and not be afraid.' " That is the better way. Why not buy a first-class ticket?
The wells of salvation are the place of comfort.
Hagar was cast out of Abram’s home and after wandering about, located a well where she cried out in sorrow. God met her at this well and the location was named El Roi. This means “Thou God seest me.” It became a place of comfort to Hagar. God saw her in the time of need and extended mercy, grace, and hope to her. Whenever our life is heavy with trial, the wells of salvation become a place of comfort for our burdened soul.
Notice that with joy, we are to draw water out of the wells of salvation. We know that drawing water out of the well is something that we program into our schedule each day. Some days, we are weak. Some days, we are in heaviness. However, regardless of what we might be going through, we can draw water out of these wells with great satisfaction and delight. Make it a point to be at the wells daily and draw out of it for your daily delight!
