Wise Counsel

Today's Verse:

Also Jonathan David's uncle was a counsellor, a wise man, and a scribe: and Jehiel the son of Hachmoni was with the king's sons: ~1 Chronicles 27:32

My first experience with a counsellor was when I was in 9^th grade. I was enrolled in a public middle school, and on my first day, I was introduced to my counsellor, Miss Betty. A few months later, I became a Christian, and I learned that Miss Betty was a Christian as well. In the few times I made an appointment to see her, I could always tell that she was very wise and discerning. I attribute this to her love for the Lord and her experiences. In life, we are in need of all kinds of counsel. We need marital counsel, financial counsel, career counsel, and health counsel. This morning, let us see the importance of having wise counsel. 

We see the primary source for counsel. 

Jesus Christ is called “Wonderful, Counsellor” in Isaiah 9:6. Our main counsel should come from God and His Word. God’s Word is perfect and never fails us. “The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations” (Psalm 33:11). God’s counsel is faithful. “There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand” (Proverbs 19:21). God’s counsel protects us from unforeseen danger. God’s counsel helps us to avoid the heartaches found in bad relationships. God’s counsel helps us to make the right decisions. God’s counsel guides us to the right paths. God’s counsel makes us to lie down in green pastures and leads us beside the still waters. Your first goal should be to always ask God to give you counsel on every decision that you make. 

We see the prioritized submission in counsel. 

“The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise” (Proverbs 12:15). “That say, Let him make speed, and hasten his work, that we may see it: and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw nigh and come, that we may know it!” (Isaiah 5:19). When we seek counsel from the Lord, it is to receive His authoritative advice and answer on a matter. God’s counsel is not a second opinion; it is the sole opinion. God’s counsel is not another option; it is “thus saith the Lord.” God’s counsel is the expert advice on all matters. His counsel requires us to be in submission. Submission includes our obedience to His commands and precepts. Submission includes immediate follow-through on what we are told. Submission is saying “yes, Lord” to His counsel. 

We see the profitable success from counsel. 

God’s counsel is always for our best outcome. It is God’s blessing upon our life. It is God’s approval upon a decision. It is God’s “no” to keep us out of trouble and heartache. It is God’s “yes” in going forward in faith. God’s counsel will require action on our part. God’s counsel involves faith on our part. God’s counsel molds us more into His image. His counsel makes us like a tree planted by the rivers of water, whose leaf does not wither, and whatsoever we do shall prosper. God’s counsel is the good success that God promised to Joshua. It is the peace that passes all understanding that enables us to sleep at night. It is the best practices we should follow when it comes to biblical parenting, financial planning, ministry guidance, people conflicts, and avoiding unnecessary storms in life. 

Hear wisdom, and get wise counsel. Be careful of relying on your senses and feelings for decision making. Lean and wait upon the Lord for your steps and decisions. Establish the testimony that you are someone who always gets your best advice from God.
