The Curse is Broken

Today's Verse:

Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: ~Galatians 3:13

A curse is a misfortune or evil that befalls a person or a group. The Kennedy clan is said to have a curse on them. Among the many tragedies this family experienced were the deaths of John F. Kennedy and Robert Kennedy by assassination. John F. Kennedy, Jr. died in an airplane accident. A curse is an evil pronounced against you that you hope can be broken or removed. This morning, we want to rejoice over a curse that has been broken. 

We see the reason. 

“Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law.” The law refers to God’s commandments and precepts. The law declares all men to be guilty as sinners. “Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin” (Romans 3:20). Commandments and laws reveal to us that we are sinners. Sin brought a curse on every person born into this world and on the earth itself. “Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers” (1 Timothy 1:9). The curse of the law leaves us hopeless for any ability on our part to do anything that can break its power. 

We see the ruin. 

Sadly, the ruin from the curse is God’s judgment and wrath on sin. “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned” (Romans 5:12). When Adam and Eve sinned, they brought death on all humanity. Death is the saddest and most heartbreaking consequence we must go through. There is separation, suffering, and sorrow in death. What's worse is dying without your sins washed away and forgiven. Sinners are nonchalant about this, but we must prepare to meet God when we leave this life. Once we leave this life, we must face judgment. Our greatest goal in life should not be in the accumulation we lay up, but in making sure we do not spend eternity in Hell. 

We see the release. 

“Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree.” Jesus took our place on the cross. When He was crucified and died on the cross, all of our sins were paid in full. His shed blood and death are the only sufficient remedy to break the curse. Fathom those words: Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law! A sinner must repent of his sins and believe that Christ died for his sins and rose again from the dead. Accepting Christ releases us from all effects of this curse. “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit” (Romans 8:1). Faith in Christ sets us free from this curse. The curse can never return to put us in bondage. 

If you are saved, thank the Lord that the curse is broken and that you are free. If you are not saved, come to Jesus with a heart of humility, and confess that you are a sinner who needs to be saved. God will save you and give you complete forgiveness of your sins and Heaven as your home.
